JABC TechWorks is a technology career program for high school students. Available both virtually and in-person, JABC TechWorks is a forum for youth to explore technology and technology-related careers and understand the education, skills and mindset needed to ensure they are tech-enabled and qualify for tech-related jobs.

During the 2021-22 school year, over 5,500 youth in urban, rural and Indigenous communities across B.C. participated in JABC TechWorks, representing a 20% increase over the previous year. The program continues to be in high demand by educators and students who get to hear from companies such as BestBuy, Amazon, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Teck, TELUS, Accenture and so many more.

Demand for skilled employees is sky high

According to KPMG’s 2018 British Columbia Technology Report Card, talent and scalability continue to be the two main constraints on B.C.’s booming technology sector.

With over 10,000 companies facilitating 100,000 jobs, BC’s technology sector employs more people than forestry, mining, oil & gas and utilities combined and continues to be one of the top five contributors to the provincial economy. An additional 83,000 jobs are expected to be added by 2027, many of which are roles that don’t even exist yet. Future employees need to be highly-skilled and adaptable in this rapidly changing business world.

Why JABC launched TechWorks

In response to this evolving landscape, JABC hosted the first TechWorks in 2017 in Vancouver.

JABC TechWorks builds upon JA Economics for Success, a program that highlights the connection between post-secondary education and an increased earning capacity and quality of life as an adult. JABC TechWorks is designed to encourage youth to consider their education choices as they approach their senior years and inspire them to consider a career in B.C.’s technology sector and beyond.

We are proud to partner with numerous companies and organizations who will be hiring for the jobs of the future and also bringing new and unique experiences to B.C. students.
